Helmsman names Yan Yan Lin CEO plans expansion

Helmsman has named Yan Yan Lin as its new CEO, signaling a shift toward broader geographic reach for the boutique law firm.

Lin’s background and immediate priorities

Lin arrives from ONE Championship, where she held the vice‑president role overseeing corporate development, commercial activities, and corporate affairs. Earlier in her career she practiced as a litigation lawyer at the Singapore firm Drew & Napier. The appointment places her at the helm of a firm that currently operates offices in Singapore and Hong Kong, the latter in partnership with Tang & Co.

In remarks to the Asia Business Law Journal, Lin said the next phase will focus on “expanding to additional jurisdictions where our clients are already present, where the commercial rationale is compelling, and where a genuine Helmsman presence would materially enhance the service we provide.” She did not specify which markets are under consideration, but emphasized a measured approach.

The first 12 months will see her concentrate on strengthening practice areas, people and culture, and enhancing systems, governance, and operational discipline. “Our focus now is to ensure that the institution we are building is every bit as strong as the pace at which it is growing,” she added.

Technology and cross‑border ambition

Another priority is the integration of artificial intelligence across the firm. Lin explained that AI will be deployed to free lawyers from routine tasks so they can concentrate on “complex, strategic issues that matter most to clients.” This move aligns with a broader industry trend toward technology‑enabled legal services.

Looking ahead, Lin expressed a desire for Helmsman to be recognized for its cross‑border capabilities on a global scale. By the end of her term, she hopes the firm will be “the firm clients turn to for their most consequential cross‑border matters in Asia, Europe and beyond,” not because it is the largest, but because it delivers “consistently high‑quality, commercially pragmatic advice.”

She also stressed that any expansion must protect the firm’s reputation. “I would like to see a firm with a carefully considered footprint across the region’s principal commercial centres, with each office a genuine extension of Helmsman rather than a satellite bearing our name,” she said.

She aims for steady growth.

From a practical standpoint, the firm’s current footprint in two major financial hubs gives it a solid platform to test new markets. If the firm can replicate its collaborative model in places where clients already have a presence, it may avoid the pitfalls of over‑extension that have hampered other regional firms. This cautious stance could prove prudent, especially as regulatory environments differ widely across Asia.

Culture remains a central theme in Lin’s vision. She wants the firm to become a place where “exceptional people choose to build long‑term careers, where our culture remains a competitive strength, and where clients know they can expect the same quality, judgement and practical advice from every Helmsman office.” The emphasis on retaining talent and delivering consistent service suggests a focus on internal cohesion as much as external growth.

While the partnership with Tang & Co. in Hong Kong provides a foothold in a key market, Lin hinted that future collaborations could follow a similar model, allowing the firm to leverage local expertise without fully duplicating infrastructure. That could be a cost‑effective way to broaden reach while maintaining the brand’s integrity.

Overall, the appointment marks a clear intent to blend traditional legal expertise with modern operational tools. Whether the firm can balance rapid expansion with the cultural and technological upgrades it promises will become clearer as Lin’s first year unfolds.
